When the AFL and NFL agreed that they would combine into a single league in 1971, they also agreed to begin playing a finals game after the 1966 season. Officially called the AFL-NFL Championship, it was soon nicknamed the Super bowl. According to a story, a team owner who thought the official title was--well, too formal--came up with the novel name while watching his grandson play with a super ball. That's most likely apocryphal. The truth seems to be that some sportswriter invented the tag and it was right away picked up by others and then by the NFL. Because of the merger, the Super Bowl has been the NFL Championship Game, played between the NFC and AFC champions, who come out from a round of playoffs. It meant to be the climax of the season, but in fact, the Superbowl has all too often been anti-climactic. The average margin of victory has been about 14 points, well above the standard for a regular-season NFL game, and there have been many blowouts. The conference championship games have typically been more attractive to watch.
